László Waldapfel was born in 1911, and studied at Budapest University to become a gymnasium teacher like his father. The discriminatory laws of the era forbade him — as they did his siblings — to occupy a teachers’ rostrum. He was also regarded as a talented mathematician. The Mathematics Research Institute in Budapest commemorates his name with a plaque.
