CEEOL Press was established in 2020 by building on the intellectual strength and the 20-year history of Central and Eastern European Online Library, a leading provider of academic e-journals and e-books in the Humanities and Social Sciences from and about Central and Eastern Europe. CEEOL may be considered as the virtual successor of Palais Jalta – Ost/West Europäisches Kulturzentrum eV (East/West European Cultural Centre “Palais Jalta”), a non-profit organization, that organized a significant number of symposia, political and cultural debates, and exhibitions between 1989-2003 with a focus on Central, East and Southeast European societies, their cultures, and issues.
By working with texts, authors, journals, publisher, and libraries from and connected to our region, it has become apparent over the years that the intellectual output lacks a platform/publisher/intellectual hub that is genuine, deeply connected to its subject and is also able to meet the new challenges rising in our digital era. CEEOL Press is determined to become such a center: a virtual meeting point connecting books and their widest possible audience, an invisible bridge between geographically, linguistically, and culturally distant regions. We strive for making the cultural heritage of the region available in our new, digital environment. Although, CEEOL Press is not an exclusively open access publisher, we do have the means and the platform to disseminate OA publishing projects.
